In the present, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain again for Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is strong. The plot follows the comic-book plot and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is returning. Taika Waititi’s quirky humor is obvious. Yet, Love and Thunder, although a strong standalone movie, doesn’t match the previous Thor instalment, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade however, his solo films have either hit the bullseye or missed the mark entirely. While the story of his origins, Thor (2011) was an okay start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a horrendous entry. And yet, anyone’s list of the top five MCU films should contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) with a definite. Expectations were high ahead of the movie’s release because of the return of the Taika Waititi/Hemsworth partnership.
When Gorr (Bale) and Bale, who seeks to destroy gods after being cheated by one, chooses to attacking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god butcher by forming a team with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his former girlfriend Jane Foster, who has transformed into Mighty Thor. The plot is simple, unlike recent Marvel movies, and the performances are exemplary in the film. Hemsworth is a great choice for the character who suffers from the midlife crisis, however Bale and Portman are the most notable. The pre-title credit scene establishes the possibilities of what Bale can do. Gorr might be the next Thanos for MCU that is in desperate need of good supervillains and Bale adds a touch of strangeness to the character but there’s not much of a amount more.
On the other on the other hand, Portman, who makes her reentry into the Marvel world after having been absent from the last two Thor films, will play the cancer-stricken ex-girlfriend who was chosen by Mjolnir. Marvel appears to be keen on handing the mantles of Hawkeye and Hulk to women characters. I expected the Mighty Thor would be similar to the representation checklist. But the film does build up a touching backstory for this astrophysicist who gets to display her biceps on many scenes.
Marvel also performs its own doing a variety of appearances. In addition to the whole Guardians of the Galaxy team there are Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone can also be seen as Hela and the director of an Asgardian play. Waititi, who has been directing since Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, works in his favorite genre again. It’s amusing to see the likes of a couple of noisy goats , as well as Korg’s narration on Thor’s backstory. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie takes on the role of Old Spice’s ambassador.
Then there’s the running gag of Thor seeking his Mjolnir and being afraid of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. Unfortunately, these gags however effective, fall at the expense of deep emotion and serve to expose the thin plot. Thor: Love and Thunder tackles various types of affection, from father-daughter relationships to complicated romances between distant lovers… There is a parallel between Gorr losing respect towards Rapu and Thor getting disillusioned with Zeus (played here by Russell Crowe). The ideas are endless, but…
There are numerous reference to films such as Harry Potter and Interstellar, as well as easter eggs. There’s a photo of the dead god, Falligar, taken straight out of comics. We can see Hemsworth sporting the original Thor costume that comic book readers will recognize. When he is fighting Zeus, Thor reveals his true colors. We are also shown a tattoo of “RIP Loki and the costume of the trickster etched on the back of our Viking. The villainous Necrosword is revealed, and it’s fascinating to see the different weapons shown to be able to control people, given the manner in which Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to have their own thoughts.
What we saw in Shang Chi’s ten rings and Ms. Marvel’s dazzling bangle as well as the Ebony blade that was featured in the Eternals post-credits scene. The statement “Gods will not empower you, but they will use you” from the new show by Marvel, Moonknight, feels very real. The loss of Valkyrie in battle to her closest friend as well as Korg being a victim of another Kronan man is also mentioned.
It is easy to think of Ragnarok’s color palette in the opening part, but much of the second half is set in the dark world of black and white. The action scenes that are monochrome can be quite satisfying but it is imperative to remember.
